University Entrance Scholarship for refugee students

First-year refugee students who are enrolled for the coming semester at Ruhr-Universität and are enrolling at a German university for the first time can apply for the University Entrance Scholarship.

Who can apply?

Refugee students who will begin their first semester at Ruhr-Universität next summer semester 2023 are eligible to apply.

The following residence titles are recognised:

  • Those with residence according

    • §22 AufenthG
    • §23 Abs. 1,2,4 AufenthG
    • §23a AufenthG
    • §24 AufenthG
    • §25 Abs 1-5 AufenthG
  • Those with a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) according to §26 AufenthG
  • Family members (parents, children, spouses) of those with recognised asylum and refugees according to the Geneva Convention and those entitled to subsidiary protection, if they can additionally prove the residence title of the original beneficiary (the family member who entered the country first) according to
    • §29, §30, §31, §32, §34 Abs. 1 and 2 and §36 AufenthG
  • Those with tolerated status (temporary suspension of deportation - Duldung according to §60a AufenthG)

Further requirements

  • Only foreign students (i.e. persons who have not acquired their higher education entrance qualification in Germany) are eligible for funding.
  • No more than five years must have passed since entering Germany, in exceptional cases seven years. We ask this in the online questionnaire of the application portal.

How much is the grant?

  • €300/month
  • Over a six-month period
  • In addition to the financial support, there is an accompanying programme with e.g. group meetings and individual consultation.

Which documents are required for the application?

  • Letter of motivation (about one page)*
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) (max. two pages)*
  • Copy of your residence permit*
  • Bank statements for the last three months (October/November/December) of all of your bank accounts*
  • Proof of German language skills at the time of application (English skills if you are planning to study a degree course taught in English)*
  • Proof of study preparatory programme (e.g. Integra or Abitur certificate)*
  • University entrance qualification (Abitur or certificate of undergraduate or master's degree) in the original and as a certified translation*
  • Admission to Ruhr-Universität Bochum (if you have not already been admitted, please submit proof of your application to Ruhr-Universität)*
  • Proof of social commitment or special achievements
