Internationalization strategy

In line with the University Development Plan 2020-2025, Ruhr University has developed a new internationalization strategy RUB International 2030. It adopted it in November 2024.

The path to our strategy

Under the leadership of the Rector, Prof. Dr. Martin Paul, and Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Kornelia Freitag and in cooperation with the International Office of Ruhr University, an advisory committee (Strategy Board Internationalization) developed a mission statement in 2023 and the internationalization strategy based on it.

Representatives of the RUBcommunity - German and international university members from the faculties, the student body and the administration - contributed their expertise and experience in internationalization to the consultation and reflection process. Other players in the internationalization work at Ruhr University contributed their perspectives to the planning of objectives and measures in stakeholder workshops.

The new internationalization strategy describes its self-image and profile as an internationally oriented university and shows which internationalization goals Ruhr-Universität wants to achieve in the coming years.

The new strategy takes particular account of the fact that society, and therefore also our university, is changing and that internationality, diversity, digitalization and sustainability are becoming increasingly important.

This is reflected in the Ruhr-Universität's key objectives for its internationalization: preparing its students optimally for the global scientific and social challenges and labour markets of the future, networking its cutting-edge research worldwide, expanding its international visibility and attractiveness, attracting international talent and strengthening its international partner network.

Internationalization is a cross-sectional task that permeates all areas and levels of the Ruhr University. We have now defined a contemporary strategic framework for our internationalization activities, which strengthens the Ruhr University as an international, future-oriented university and is implemented with the participation of the entire RUB-community.

Prof. Dr. Martin Paul, Rector of the Ruhr University Bochum

The strategy focuses on eight relevant fields of action for internationalization at the Ruhr University:

  • Study and teaching
  • Research
  • Knowledge and technology transfer with social impact
  • Strategic international partnerships and networks
  • Global engagement
  • Community
  • Operational excellence in internationalization
  • International marketing and recruitment

Derived from the strategic goals, key measures were developed and prioritized that provide impetus for the future-oriented further development of the Ruhr University and contribute to the goals formulated in the fields of action of the internationalization strategy. The implementation of the strategic goals, milestones and measures will be coordinated centrally in future. Successive implementation and evaluation is planned, in which the measures will also be checked at regular intervals for their feasibility and adapted as required.

At Ruhr University, we develop international research projects, degree courses and networks that have an impact via the universities in their cities and regions. With the new internationalization strategy, Ruhr University is also realizing its motto "Built to Change" internationally.
