PROMOS Thesis

The PROMOS programme can fund research stays abroad for the purpose of writing a final thesis (Bachelor's, Master's, Diplom, Magister, state examination thesis). Eligible for funding are projects lasting one to six months.

Next application deadline: 1 March 2022

For research stays in the funding period 1 January 2022 until 31 December 2022, provided that the application will be submitted before the end of the stay, in due form and time.

There is one more application deadline for thesis projects in the year 2022: 1 June 2022.

Important Notes and Restrictions

  • Scholarships will not be awarded to those applicants intending to attend courses at the host institution.
  • Unfortunately, PhD students cannot be funded for stays abroad to complete their PhD thesis.
  • Medical students writing their PhD thesis can be funded by PROMOS.

Application Requirements

  • German citizenship or persons who are on a par with Germans according to § 8 Absatz 1 Ziffer 2 ff., Absatz 2, 2a und 3 BAföG (Das BAföG)
  • International degree-seeking students enrolled at Ruhr-Universität Bochum can be funded in all subprogrammes, as long as they do not intend to stay in their home country. The home country is considered to be the country in which the student has been living predominantly for at least five years.
  • Enrolled at Ruhr-Universität Bochum as full-time students
  • Good academic records
  • Students need to be already admitted to the final examination when applying for this subprogramme. A topic has to be already assigned to them. If it is prohibited by the examination regulations to know the topic, students need to indicate the field of research/department they wish to write the thesis in. The coordinator has to confirm this assertion in a letter that has to be attached to the application.

Funding

  • Travel allowance and/or monthly partial scholarship rate

Depending on the host country and the duration of stay

Please note that "Aufenthaltspauschalen" (= lump sum for stay) can only be paid for study trips. Financing tuition fees through a "Teilstipendium Studiengebühren (Höchstsatz)" [= partial scholarship tuition (maximum rate)] is not possible within the framework of the PROMOS programme at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, as the university exclusively supports tuition fee-free stays at partner universities within the framework of an institutional exchange programme.

  • Important note:

Applications of students who already receive funding for their stay abroad will have to be checked separately.

Selection Criteria

All applicants are evaluated by an internal selection committee consisting of members of various faculties. Approximately four weeks after the submission deadline, candidates will be determined in a selection meeting organised and coordinated by the International Office. The selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Academic records
  • Purpose of the stay
  • Motivation
  • Language skills
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Academic progress and potential
  • Extracurricular activities and interests
  • Formal requirements on the application documents

Usually it takes about six weeks to receive a response.
