EU Freedom of Movement (EU Freizügigkeit)

If you are a citizen of the EU or the EEA and intend to spend more that three months in Germany, you need to proof your right to Freedom of Movement.

  • Passport or ID card
  • Verification of activity in Germany (e.g. employment contract, confirmation from the host institution)
  • Letter of invitation from the host institution
  • Proof of health insurance cover
  • Fellowship acceptance letter
  • For family members: marriage certificate, birth certificate (original and certified German or English translation)

In Bochum

The Foreign Citizens’ Office of the City of Bochum is responsible for issuing residence permits. For EU citizens who will be staying in Bochum for longer than three months it also examines the Freedom of Movement. EU citizens can apply directly at the Resident Registration Office when they register with the City of Bochum.
