Accommodation for exchange students

The International Office reserves rooms in student housing for exchange students who plan to attend Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) for one or two semesters.

In this room contingent, furnished rooms as well as entire flats in five different Academic Support Group (AKAFÖ) student dormitories can be reserved.

Rooms and flats detailed

Location: All residence halls are located in Bochum-Querenburg near the main campus of the university.

There are three types of housing:

  • Single room (common bathroom and kitchen)
  • Single room in a shared flat (WG) with two-three other students

Furnishings: All rooms/flats are furnished with a single bed (90 x 200 cm), a desk, a wardrobe as well as hanging shelves. Photos of how student rooms could look can be found on here.

Bedding and kitchen equipment (pots, plates, cutlery, etc.) are not provided.

Rental prices: The rent for a stay of 6-12 months varies between €255.00 and €420.00 per month, depending on the residence. Electricity, heating and internet are included in the rent.

Applying for a room

Nominated exchange students will receive an accommodation request form via email. If you would like to book a room through the International Office, please complete the request form and submit it per the instructions indicated.

After the application deadline, you will receive a room offer via email. Once you accept the room offer, we will then be able to issue you a reservation confirmation via email.

After receiving the reservation confirmation, you must transfer a deposit of two months' rent within the specified period. You will not be able to move into your room without a deposit paid in advance. The deposit will be fully refunded after you move out.

Please note: Rooms are rented for 6 or 12 for whole months:

  • From September to February or August (from winter semester, 6 or 12 months)
  • From March to August or February (from summer semester, 6 or 12 months)

The minimum rental period is therefore 6 months and the maximum rental period is 12 months.

Moving out and handing over your keys

Please make an appointment with your dormitory's house manager to hand over the keys to your room.

You will receive an email from Gundra Stückrath closer to end of term detailing what to expect when moving out and handing over your keys.

Private housing market

You can also look for your own accommodation on the private housing market. Many flats and rooms in shared flats for students can be found online.
