Step 1: Find and apply for a German course

The Ruhr University Bochum has its own Department of "German as a Foreign Language (DaF)" in its University Language Centre (ZFA), which offers German courses that prepare students for their academic studies. Additional German language course providers include Interculturas e.V. in cooperation with the university's general student committee (AStA), and the Studienkolleg Bochum.

Please note: Due to the Corona pandemic, information may vary. Check directly with the German course provider for current course times, prices and course type (digital or face-to-face).

The Department of German as a Foreign Language (DaF)

The Department of German as a Foreign Language at Ruhr University offers German courses (B1-C1) for prospective students who already have a university entrance qualification (HZB). The German courses prepare students for the TestDaF examination.

  • 10 weeks per course (20 lessons per week).
  • Test at the end of each course
  • Continuous courses (also during semester breaks)
  • Approx. 20 participants per course
  • €500 per level
  • TestDaF preparation course (course duration: 4-6 weeks)

Other course providers

The Interculturas e.V. in association with AStA and the Studienkolleg Bochum offer German courses close to campus. Of course in Bochum and the surrounding area a number of other course providers, i.e. other language schools, commercial and publicly funded providers will also offer German language courses.

When choosing a provider outside of those detailed on this page, please make sure that the choosen course prepares you for a recognised language exam that qualifies you to study, e.g. TestDaF, DHS II or III or telc C1 Hochschule.


In cooperation with AStA of the Ruhr University, Interculturas e.V. also offers language courses (A1-C1) and prepares students for the DSH examination. A university entrance qualification (HZB) is not necessarily required for this.

How do I apply for Interculturas?

Interculturas offers German courses four times a year. Registration takes place online. A distinction is made between registration for level A1 (no language skills) and all other levels, as these require a placement test.

Studienkolleg Bochum

The Studienkolleg Bochum also offers German courses at levels A1 - C1 for prospective students with a university entrance qualification (HZB). The German courses are intensive language courses with an average of 31 hours per week (25 teaching hours + 8 tutorial hours).

  • 7-8 weeks per course (from 2023: 9-10)
  • approx. 190 hours of tuition (from 2023: approx. 240)
  • 175€ course fee per level for materials and tutorials (from 2023: 220€)
  • DSH exam preparation
  • DSH exam preparation at the end of the C1 course
