Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Martin Paul
Rector of Ruhr University Bochum
Professor Martin Paul has been President of Ruhr University Bochum since November 2021. Prior to this, he was President of Maastricht University (UM) in the Netherlands. After studying medicine and obtaining his doctorate at Heidelberg University, he held several academic positions at universities in Germany, the United States, and the Netherlands.
In addition to his career as a researcher in (clinical) pharmacology and toxicology as well as in hypertension research, he was active in academic self-administration, for example as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Freie Universität Berlin and as a member of the Executive Board of Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin. In 2008, he moved to Maastricht University, where he holds a chair in Clinical Pharmacology, in addition to his professorship in Experimental Medicine at Ruhr University Bochum.
Beyond his activities in research and teaching, Professor Paul has actively promoted the professionalization of academic governance structures and strategies at the international level. From 2016 to 2021, he was a member of the expert panel of the German Excellence Strategy, and from 2016 to 2022, he advised the Austrian government as a member of the Austrian Science Council.
He currently serves on several advisory and supervisory boards in Germany and internationally. In 2021, he was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau by His Majesty the King of the Netherlands for his services to higher education in the Netherlands and beyond.
