Mmeli Dube is a post-doctoral researcher in the Politics and Urban Governance (PUG) Research Group in the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
In this capacity, he leads PUG’s African Universities Hub for Human Rights (the Africa Hub), a continental initiative that supports networks of universities and civil society actors working to protect democracy and human rights defenders (HRDs) across Africa.
His research interests include civil society, citizenengagement, citizenship and democracy, governance in urban informality, urban sanitation systems, and human rights.
He has participated in international research collaborations and projects, contributing to interdisciplinary and collaborative publications on non-sewered sanitation in informal urban contexts, urban governance, democratic values, democratic citizenship, social justice.
Mmeli combines academic research with knowledge gained from leadership and activism in civil society, particularly in areas such as public accountability, citizen–state interface, electoral processes, and youth participation.
