International Office - Internationalisation

The motto "Creating Knowledge Networks" also determines Ruhr University Bochum (RUB)'s internationalisation strategy. As a successful international research university, RUB therefore defines globally networked and excellent research, also and especially that which contributes to solving global societal challenges, as the anchor and starting point of all internationalisation measures.

This explicitly includes all other fields of action of strategic internationalisation: Therefore, internationally networked and forward-looking cutting-edge research provides the basis for international and research-oriented teaching, research-based transfer, for global and sustainable social engagement and, of course, for our promotion of young researchers at all qualification levels, which has received several international awards in the Excellence Initiative and beyond.

It goes without saying that an internationally experienced and competent administration and an internationally positioned science management are necessary to optimally advise and support the scientific sector in all these activities.

However, special importance is also attached to RUB's international strategic and network partners, with whom it successfully pursues its goals in the various fields of action of internationalisation.

Tailor-made internationalisation at RUB by means of dialogue-oriented governance

The university-wide internationalisation strategy of RUB, which is continuously updated and further developed in a joint dialogue process between the Rectorate, the International Office and the Network of Faculty Internationalisation Officers of the RUB, is firmly anchored in the scientific departments and faculties (countercurrent principle).

Based on the university-wide strategic internationalisation goals, the faculties develop their own specific internationalisation plans, which are tailored to the respective situation and context of the faculties.

In its internationalisation strategy RUB focuses on the following objectives

  • Effective integration of all RUB‘s researchers into top-level international research
  • Promotion of a knowledgable intercultural attitude (understanding and competences) of all members of the university
  • Provision of early and continuous international and intercultural experiences for students and young researchers
  • Acceptance of international responsibility in global engagement
  • Attraction of more international students and researchers by attractive offers of research, learning and teaching, transfer/social engagement and by even better service and support
